ATHENS, Ga. (AP) -Georgia forward Kendrick Johnson will transfer to San Jose (Calif.) City College for academic and medical reasons, Georgia coach Dennis Felton said Tuesday.
Felton said he hopes Johnson can return to Georgia.
Johnson has had two reconstructive surgeries on his ankles and needs the time in junior college to continue his medical rehabilitation while he also works on his academics.
Johnson (6-9), from Morton, Texas, played in 14 games last season, averaging 2.3 points and 2.1 rebounds. His season ended in February with the first of the two surgeries.
Felton said Johnson is academically eligible to remain at Georgia ``and he is in perfectly good standing with our basketball team.''
Added Felton: ``We concluded, though, that this was the best decision for Kendrick and his scholastic future, and he and I both hope that he keeps himself in position to return to Georgia to continue his career.''
